Lawyer Shot Dead Inside District Panchayat Office in Rampur; Clerk Arrested
Rampur (Uttar Pradesh): A 45-year-old lawyer, Farooq Ahmed Khan, was shot dead in broad daylight inside the District Panchayat office in Rampur on February 11, 2026, triggering outrage among the local legal community.
According to police, the incident stemmed from a dispute between two clerks. Farooq’s wife, Gausia, who works as a clerk in the District Panchayat office, reportedly had a heated argument earlier in the day with fellow clerk Asgar Ali, a resident of Tahawwur village under Patwai police station limits.
Following the altercation, Gausia called her husband to the office. Around 1 pm, Advocate Farooq reached the premises and went to Asgar Ali’s cabin to confront him. CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts suggest that the verbal exchange escalated, and Farooq allegedly slapped Asgar, leading to a physical scuffle.
During the confrontation, Asgar Ali allegedly pulled out his licensed revolver and fired multiple shots. Farooq sustained two bullet injuries to the chest and was rushed to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Gausia was also allegedly assaulted with the butt of the weapon and sustained injuries.
Police said the accused clerk also suffered a gunshot wound, suspected to be self-inflicted, allegedly to support a claim of self-defence.
The incident led to chaos at the district hospital, where family members of the deceased created a ruckus in the emergency ward. Lawyers in Rampur staged protests, alleging deteriorating law and order and demanding stronger protection measures for advocates, including a Lawyers’ Protection Act.
Rampur Superintendent of Police Vidya Sagar Mishra, Additional SP Anurag Singh and District Magistrate Ajay Kumar Dwivedi reached the hospital to pacify the agitated family.
Police have arrested Asgar Ali, who is currently under medical supervision while in custody. An FIR has been registered under Section 103 (Murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further legal action will be taken based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family.
Authorities said a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the full sequence of events.
