Racial Slurs, Belt Assault Near Saket Court: Delhi Park Attack on Northeast Women Sparks Outrage
A case has been registered by the Delhi Police after a woman from Manipur was allegedly assaulted near the Saket District Court Complex in south Delhi on Sunday evening.

According to police, the incident took place when the victim and her friends were walking in a park in Malviya Nagar. A group of youths allegedly passed inappropriate and racially derogatory remarks at them. When the woman objected, the situation escalated into a confrontation and the group allegedly attacked the victims.

Preliminary accounts state that the woman from Manipur and her friend, a transgender person from Assam, were allegedly punched and beaten with belts while the attackers hurled abusive slurs. Another woman from Assam was also reportedly targeted during the incident.

The injured victim was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors confirmed that she sustained minor injuries and is currently recovering.

Police said a criminal case has been registered under relevant sections of the law and multiple teams have been deployed to identify and apprehend the accused. Officials added that they are in constant touch with the victim and are providing necessary assistance as the investigation continues.

On Monday, police also apprehended four minors in connection with the alleged assault. Authorities said further action will be taken based on the victim’s statement.

The incident has triggered strong reactions from leaders in the Northeast. Conrad K. Sangma condemned the attack, describing it as racial bullying against people from the Northeast and urged strict action against those responsible.

In a post on X, Sangma wrote that repeated attacks on people from the Northeast in mainland India were “sickening” and called on authorities to ensure that racial bullying does not become the “new normal”.

Police sources said the victims had also reportedly faced similar verbal harassment in the locality on previous occasions.

The case comes just days after another incident of alleged racial abuse in Delhi, where a man identified as Harsh Singh was booked following a dispute with three women from Arunachal Pradesh living in a rented apartment in south Delhi.

According to police, the dispute began on February 20 when the women had called an electrician to install an air conditioner in their fourth-floor flat. During drilling work, dust and debris reportedly fell into the apartment below, leading to objections from Singh and his wife, Ruby Jain.

The women later alleged that the couple abused them and made racist remarks, including calling them “gutter-chaap” and telling them to “go and sell momos”.

The recent assault near the Saket court complex has once again raised concerns over the safety of people from the Northeast living in the national capital. Police said the investigation into the latest case is ongoing.
